What are viral warts?

Viral warts are very common and completely benign. They are commonest on the hands and feet but also affect the face and genital area.

What causes viral warts?

They are caused by an infection of the skin cells with human papilloma virus. The virus infects by direct inoculation and is caught by touch, sexual contact or at the swimming baths.

How can viral warts be treated?

Viral warts often disappear spontaneously without scarring. If they persist, then hand and foot warts should be pared down with a pumice stone or nail file and then treated with wart paints. If this fails, then cryotherapy can be applied but it often needs to be repeated every 3-4 weeks in order to clear the warts .
