What is herpes simplex?
Herpes Simplex is a very common viral infection which is responsible for cold sores and herpes of the genitalia and mouth (the latter two typically sexually transmitted).
There are two main types of the virus; Type 1 and Type 2. Both viruses can cause any one or more of the conditions listed above and are becoming equally common. However, conventionally Type 1 herpes virus usually affects the face and the Type 2 virus affects the genitalia.

- Cold sores: Red, itchy lesion over lip or edges of mouth, tingling sensation before the cold sore appears.
- Genital herpes: Vesicles, red, painful and itchy. May burst, penile discharge
How can herpes simplex be treated?
- Topical antiviral cream: Skin based Acyclovir preparations
- Oral Acyclovir
