What is keratoacanthoma?

Keratoacanthoma is a NON cancerous growth typically seen in areas of the skin exposed to the sun regularly. The condition usually resolves on its own, but may leave a scar.

What causes keratoacanthoma?

Exact cause is unknown. However, prolonged sun exposure is the main risk factor.

What are the symptoms?

  • Dome shaped nodule (about 2cm in diameter)
  • Rapidly grows over a few weeks
  • Typically seen on the face
  • Thickened, dark plug at the middle made of keratin is usually seen
  • Usually painless and not itchy

How can keratoacanthoma be treated?

  • Surgical excision or curettage (shave) are widely used
