Cysts
Cysts are benign lumps that form beneath the surface of the skin. The most common types are epidermoid cysts and pilar cysts. They contain keratin, a soft cheese-like material, and often feel smooth, round and mobile under the skin.
Symptoms and features
- Round, firm lump under the skin
- Often with a central punctum
- Slowly enlarging over time
- May become red and inflamed if infected
Cysts are not dangerous, but when inflamed they can become painful and may discharge.
Treatment options
Definitive treatment involves complete removal of the cyst sac to prevent recurrence. Options include:
- Excision biopsy
- Incision and drainage for infected cysts, followed by later removal
