Dermatofibroma
A dermatofibroma is a firm benign skin nodule that often develops after a minor injury such as an insect bite or ingrown hair. It is composed of fibrous tissue and remains stable over time. Although harmless, dermatofibromas can be tender or cosmetically noticeable.
Typical characteristics
- Firm button-like nodule
- Often brown or pink in colour
- Commonly found on legs, arms and shoulders
- Dimpling when the edges are pinched inward
Dermatofibromas do not disappear on their own, but they usually remain unchanged for years.
Diagnosis and treatment
Diagnosis is usually clinical, but lesions with atypical features may need a punch biopsy for confirmation.
Treatment is only required if:
- The lesion is painful or itchy
- There is uncertainty about the diagnosis
- Removal is requested for cosmetic reasons
Surgical excision is the definitive treatment, although it results in a small scar.
