Pulsed Dye Laser for red marks

Pulsed dye laser (PDL) is a specialised vascular laser used to treat conditions caused by visible or excess blood vessels in the skin. It is particularly effective for persistent redness, facial thread veins and certain vascular birthmarks.

Conditions treated with pulsed dye laser

PDL can improve a range of red lesions and marks, including:

How pulsed dye laser works

The laser emits a controlled pulse of yellow light that is preferentially absorbed by haemoglobin in the blood vessels. This converts to heat and selectively damages the target vessels, which are then gradually reabsorbed by the body.

  • Minimal impact on surrounding skin
  • Improves background redness and visible vessels
  • Short treatment sessions with focused energy delivery

Treatment course and results

Multiple sessions are usually required for optimum improvement, especially for port wine stains or extensive rosacea. Gradual lightening of redness and reduction in visible vessels occur over several weeks after each treatment.

Maintenance sessions may be advised for conditions prone to recurrence, such as rosacea, particularly if there are ongoing triggers like sun exposure.

What to expect during and after treatment

You will wear protective goggles throughout the procedure. Short pulses of laser light are delivered to the area, often described as a quick flick or elastic band snap. Cooling measures reduce discomfort. After treatment, redness and mild swelling are common and usually settle within a few days.

In some cases, temporary purplish marks or bruising can occur at treated sites. These resolve as the vessels break down and the skin heals.
