Preparing for laser treatment
Preparing properly for laser treatment helps achieve the safest and most effective results. Dr Michelle Thomson will assess your skin type, discuss your goals and select the appropriate laser technology at The Birmingham Skin Clinic.
Avoiding sun exposure
Sun exposure increases the risk of pigmentation changes after laser treatment. You should:
- Avoid sunbathing and tanning for several weeks before treatment
- Use high SPF sunscreen daily
- Avoid sunbeds entirely
For pigmentation or vascular treatments, the skin should be as close to its natural tone as possible before beginning the course.
Skincare preparation
In the week before treatment, you may be asked to:
- Stop using active skincare products such as retinol unless advised otherwise
- Avoid exfoliation or abrasive treatments
- Keep the skin clean and moisturised
For laser hair removal, the treatment area should be shaved within 24 hours of your appointment unless Dr Thomson advises differently.
Medication and medical conditions
Please inform the clinic of any medications that increase photosensitivity, including some antibiotics and acne treatments. A temporary delay may be recommended until your skin is safe for treatment.
During your appointment
Protective eyewear is used for all laser procedures. Dr Thomson will guide you through each step so you know what to expect. Laser sessions vary from a few minutes to longer appointments depending on the area and condition being treated.
