Preparing for skin surgery
Preparing well for skin surgery helps ensure the procedure is safe, comfortable and successful. Dr Michelle Thomson will explain your specific treatment and answer any questions before you attend. Most procedures are carried out under local anaesthetic at The Birmingham Skin Clinic.
Before your procedure
Ahead of your appointment, you may be advised to:
- Avoid sunburn or tanning of the treatment area
- Continue or pause certain medications as discussed
- Arrange transport if your wound will limit driving or movement
- Eat and drink normally unless you have been told otherwise
If you are taking blood thinning medication, please ensure Dr Thomson is aware. In many cases, treatment can still proceed, but individual planning is required.
If you have a pacemaker or implantable cardiac defibrillator, please ensure Dr Thomson is aware and bring the card with details of the device.
What to wear
Wear comfortable clothing that gives easy access to the treatment area. For example, short sleeves for arm lesions or loose tops for shoulder or neck procedures. Avoid makeup or heavy creams on the site if surgery will be on the face.
Understanding the procedure
Dr Thomson will explain the nature of your surgery, including whether it involves a shave biopsy, excision biopsy or another technique. You will have time to ask questions about risks, benefits, scarring and aftercare.
Medicines and allergies
Please inform the clinic of any allergies, especially to anaesthetics, dressings or antiseptic solutions. Bring a list of your medicines to ensure all relevant details are considered.
