Melanoma

Melanoma is a serious type of skin cancer that arises from pigment producing melanocytes. It can develop within an existing mole or appear as a new lesion. Early detection and treatment offer the best outcomes.

Warning signs

Melanoma often follows the ABCDE rule:

  • Asymmetry
  • Border irregularity
  • Colour variation
  • Diameter larger than 6 mm
  • Evolving changes in size, shape or symptoms

Other concerning signs include new pigment in adulthood, a mole that stands out from the rest, or persistent itching or bleeding.

Risk factors

  • Fair skin and tendency to burn
  • History of sunbed use
  • Family history of melanoma
  • Large numbers of moles or atypical moles

Treatment

Melanoma is diagnosed by surgical removal of the lesion using an excision biopsy. If melanoma is confirmed, a wide local excision is performed to reduce the risk of recurrence.
