MDT discussion
MDT discussion refers to a multidisciplinary team review where complex or high risk skin cancers are assessed by several specialists working together. Dr Michelle Thomson participates in MDT meetings to ensure that patients at The Birmingham Skin Clinic receive fully informed and evidence based care.
What an MDT involves
An MDT typically includes dermatologists, skin cancer surgeons, oncologists, radiologists and specialist pathologists. Each member reviews your clinical details, examination findings and any biopsy or imaging results.
The aim is to agree on the safest and most effective management plan for your diagnosis, which may include surgery, wider excision, surveillance or referral for additional treatments.
Why MDT discussion matters
- Ensures opinions from several specialists are considered
- Supports accurate staging and treatment planning
- Helps confirm whether further tests are required
- Provides reassurance that decisions follow the latest clinical guidelines
How MDT outcomes are shared
After the MDT meeting, Dr Thomson will explain the agreed outcome, the reasoning behind the recommendations and the next steps in your care. This may involve surgery, wider excision, follow up or treatment in collaboration with hospital services.
