Lipomas

Lipomas are benign growths composed of fat cells that form soft lumps under the skin. They grow slowly and can occur anywhere on the body. Although harmless, they may cause discomfort or become more noticeable over time.

Characteristics

  • Soft, rubbery lump beneath the skin
  • Mobile when pressed
  • Usually painless
  • Often solitary but may be multiple

Lipomas do not turn into cancer, but fast enlargement or firmness should be assessed to rule out other conditions.

Treatment

Lipomas are treated by surgical removal, which is usually a straightforward procedure under local anaesthetic. Complete excision significantly reduces the risk of recurrence.
