Squamous cell carcinoma in-situ (Bowen’s disease)
Bowen’s disease is an early form of squamous cell carcinoma where cancerous cells are confined to the surface layer of the skin. It grows slowly but can progress to invasive SCC if untreated.
Typical features
- A persistent red or scaly patch
- A flat lesion with a dry or crusted surface
- Most often on legs, trunk or sun exposed areas
- May resemble eczema or psoriasis
Because it can be difficult to distinguish from inflammatory skin conditions, diagnosis may require a punch biopsy.
Treatment options
- Prescription creams such as fluorouracil or imiquimod
- Cryotherapy
- Photodynamic therapy
- Surgical removal for resistant or thicker lesions
