Sebaceous Hyperplasia

Sebaceous hyperplasia occurs when the oil glands in the skin enlarge, causing small yellowish bumps, most often on the forehead and cheeks. These lesions are benign but can resemble early basal cell carcinoma, so accurate diagnosis is important.

Typical appearance

  • Small yellow or flesh coloured bumps
  • Often with a central dip
  • More common in older adults and those with oily skin
  • Usually multiple

Sebaceous hyperplasia does not represent skin cancer but may coexist with other conditions, so specialist review is recommended if any bump changes in colour, size or shape.

Treatment

Options include:

  • Cautery or electrosurgery
  • Laser treatment for cosmetic improvement
