Other benign skin lumps and bumps
Many benign lesions can appear on the skin throughout life, ranging from small papules to deeper nodules. These include fibrous papules, angiomas, neurofibromas and other harmless growths. Although benign, they may be investigated if they change or if reassurance is needed.
Fibrous papules
Fibrous papules are small firm bumps most often found on the nose. They are dome shaped, smooth and skin coloured or pink. They remain stable with time and do not represent skin cancer.
Other common benign lesions
- Angiomas and red vascular papules
- Benign nerve sheath lesions
- Small keratin filled bumps
- Stable long standing nodules without concerning features
Diagnosis and treatment
A dermatologist can assess whether a lesion is benign through examination and, where necessary, dermatoscopy or biopsy. Treatment is usually only required if:
- The lesion catches or becomes irritated
- Appearance is causing concern
- There is uncertainty about the diagnosis
Removal methods vary depending on the lesion type and may include cautery, shave removal or surgical excision.
